WESTMINSTER ABBEY

A grand place of Christian worship, Westminster Abbey has been part of British history for 1.000 years. Kings and queens have been crowned in the abbey since 1066, and it is the final resting place for 17 of them.  The present structure dates from 1245, when it was started by Henry III. Despite its great age, Westminster Abbey is still part of British religious life. The building also hosts concerts, lectures, and special services throughout the year. It is visited by thousands of tourists every year. It has a Gothic architectural style.  The status of the Abbey is that of a   Royal Peculiar . This means it is place of worship that falls directly under the jurisdiction of the British  monarch , rather than under a bishop . The concept dates from Anglo-Saxon   times, when a church could ally itself with the monarch and therefore not be subject to the bishop of the area. The clock tower of the Houses of Parliament in London is often called Big Ben, but the name really belongs to an enormous bell inside the tower. The tower of Big Ben is an important London landmark. The clock is known for being an excellent time-keeper. The bell is known for the sound it makes as it chimes every hour on the hour. Four smaller bells in the tower chime the quarter hours. The main bell is also known as the Great Bell. The clock tower, which is also known as the Elizabeth Tower, is 315 feet (96 meters) tall and has 393 steps. The clock mechanism weighs five tons. Its pendulum is 12.8 feet (3.9 meters) long. The Great Bell weighs 13.5 tons. It is 7.2 feet (2.2 meters) tall. The tower and the bell both date from the 1800s. In 1834 a fire destroyed most of the old Parliament building. Sir Charles Barry (1795-1860) won a competition to design a new building.
